Founded as Physkos in Antiquity, today's Marmaris keeps only the tiny
castle downtown as a relic of its ancient heritage. Conquered first by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC, and then by Turkish Forces in the 13th century AD, Marmaris was also the setting out point of Süleyman the Magnificent's victorius Rhodes Campaign.
The town deserves its fame as the center of "the Turkish Riviera" with its charming bays reaching into pine forests, its marina, its hotels and vacation clubs. One of the most important touristic spots on the Mediterranean, and the port of origin for touristic motorboat riders to Rhodes, Marmaris is also among the chief starting points of the "Blue Voyages".
